Why donate to CDAF?
Did you know that a scholarship fund has to contain a minimum of $25,000.00 to be fully endowed?  It is at this level that the California Dietetic Association Foundation can assume that sufficient interest will be earned to award scholarships and sustain the fund.  When a scholarship is considered fully endowed, the Foundation can begin to award scholarships from the fund.  There are several ways that you can help to make this happen:
1. The newest and easiest way is to sign up for eScrip at www.escrip.com.  After you sign up for eScrip, a participating store will donate a percentage of your purchase to CDAF.  There is no charge to you to participate in eScrip!  Vons in Southern California and Safeway in Northern California are just two of the participating merchants.  CDAF's group number is #6425415.  Sign up today!  Many California organizations earn over $25,000.00 per year from eScrip.  That would be enough for CDAF to fund one new scholarship per year!
2. Donate money by designating CDAF through the United Way campaign.
3. Honor a loved one or recognize a colleague's achievements by donating money to the CDAF Recognition Fund.  Retrieve the CDAF Donation Recognition Form in pdf format.  Print out this form, and send to Pat Smith at the CDA office.  See CDAF Contact Info below.
4. Leave a Legacy.  Remember the California Dietetic Association Foundation in your will or as a beneficiary in your life insurance.  Your remembrance will help support dietetic students, promote nutrition research and provide nutrition education to Californians.  Click here to learn more about how you can leave a legacy for dietetic education and community nutrition education.  Contact: Dorothy Chen-Maynard, PhD, RD.

Leave a Legacy :: What You Can Do Today
1. Make a will!  Almost half the people in the US die without a will, thus missing one of the best and easiest ways to leave money to a charity of your choice.  If you die with no will, state law determines how your assets are to be distributed and your favorite charity will receive nothing from you.
2. Having written your will (with appropriate legal advice), be sure to include a paragraph, which describes each bequest (a specific gift) to a family member or friend or to your favorite charity.
3. In addition to having a will, you may set up a living trust (with a lawyer’s help and advice) in which you can list specific gifts from your estate to the charitable organizations you wish to benefit.
4. Your estate consists of all your property and possessions at the time of your death.  You may leave any possession to a charity such as securities, jewelry, art, a vehicle, boat, home or real estate.
5. You can donate an existing (or a new) life insurance policy by making the charity you select the policy’s owner or beneficiary.
6. You can benefit any charity by establishing a permanent endowment fund.  Its future income will go to meet a specific need or provide for the programs you have designated in advance.
7. You can establish a “planned gift” with a charity that gives you (and another person if you wish) lifetime income, an immediate tax deduction and the gift will benefit the charity when you (both) die.
8. You may name a charity as beneficiary of your IRA or other pension account and receive a number of favorable tax benefits.
9. You can leave money to your favorite charity by encouraging family and friends to make their own wills and include bequests to their favorite charities.

In order to be able to award these scholarships, they must reach a funding level of $25,000.  Please consider contributing to the memories of these two wonderful individuals.
