Your CDA Media
Spokespeople, Ruth Frechman and Andrea Giancoli, made headlines this
past National Nutrition Month as they spread the word about healthy
eating and drinking and about who and what is CDA. Andrea Giancoli worked with the Bellflower
Unified School District Nutrition Network and
the Los Cerritos YMCA to host over 500 parents and children at the
“Healthy Kids Day Community Fair” on Saturday, March 12. Students and
parents alike were thrilled to have little cherries and apples painted
on their cheeks. They took the milk taste challenge with Andrea and
found out 1% low fat milk is actually pretty good! Bobby Banana,
Sherry Strawberry, Cal Carrot and Clifford the Dog even made some
surprise appearances!
Across town at John Burroughs High School, Ruth Frechman partnered with
the National Dairy Council’s 3 a Day Campaign for Stronger Bones to bare
the bony truth. “We just aren’t getting enough calcium. In fact, not
even half of us are getting the recommended three servings a day”, said
Ruth Frechman, Registered Dietitian. At the event, students had their
pictures taken with a milk mustache, danced to a medley of tunes from
the 60s, ate milk, yogurt and string cheese and were reminded by Ruth
“it’s easy to get three servings of calcium a day in your diet.” She
suggested the following: 1) put milk in cereal; 2) eat yogurt and string cheese for a
snack; 3) drink nonfat chocolate milk and almonds for a delicious treat;
and 4) serve broccoli and dark green leafy vegetables with dinner. Burbank
Mayor Marsha Ramos even stopped by to present the school with a National
Nutrition Month proclamation.
All
in all, Ruth and Andrea did a superb job representing the California
Dietetic Association and Registered Dietitians during National Nutrition
Month and beyond. Thank you, Ruth and Andrea, for all you have contributed to our
profession.
