For Our Students :: How to Become a Dietetic Technician, Registered (DTR)
 
What is a Dietetic Technician, Registered?
The DTR is a health care professional educated in nutrition and food management, and general sciences.  A DTR is an integrated part of a health and food management team.  The DTR work with the RD in a variety of settings, including heath care, business, and industry, public health, foodservice and research.
Educational Requirements of the DTR
The DTR (Dietetic Technician, Registered) has earned at least an associate degree from a regionally accredited college or university.  Food science, psychology, nutrition, diet therapy, and food service management are among the courses required to meet educational standards.
Practical supervised training in an accredited program is required.  This experience teaches the application of scientific nutrition and dietetic principles to a variety of work settings.
The DTR have passed their respective national competency examination and have completed ongoing continuing education requirements.
