Welcome to Advocacy and Public Policy!
Registered dietitian nutritionists (RDN) advocate for patients every day. But who advocates for the RDNs? The Public Policy Council (PPC) of the California Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (CA Academy) is leading the charge in advocating for RDNs in the state. They are a group of individual RDNs from each district and is led by the Vice President of Public Policy, Brenda O’Day. Visit the CA Academy’s advocacy page here.
Here are the who, what, where, when, and why:
Who: Advocacy is made up of everyone who has a stake in any policy/legislation that is being written, passed, and/or signed into law. Feel free to contact your DVD Public Policy Representative Representative here or the Vice President of Public Policy, Brenda O’Day here.
What: Advocacy is to demonstrate the interests of a group to legislators. Lobbying is to influence a legislator to vote one way or another about a specific legislation. Look here for the list of legislation monitored by the CA Academy.
Where: Advocacy can be done locally, nationally, in person, or online. Legislative Ambassadors must be a constituent of the legislator that they represent.
