Foundation Scholarships and Awards

The California Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Foundation (CA Academy Foundation) offers seven scholarships annually for dietetic students and one scholarship for a Registered Dietitian that is enrolled in or admitted to a Master's
Degree program. Each scholarship award is $2,000.

Note: A student is not eligible to win the same scholarship two years in a row. Students are only able to receive one scholarship per scholarship year.

General Scholarship requirements include:
Resident of California/US Citizen
Member of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics

Below are the available scholarships provided through CANDF. Please review the scholarships. Please note that two different applications are provided below: 1) CANDF Scholarship Application, 2) Phyllis S. Howe Award and Scholarships. Details follow.

Complete the CAND Foundation Scholarship Application for the following scholarships:

Dolores Nyhus Graduate Fellowship Fund Requirements: 

  • *Registered Dietitian (RD) or Dietetic Technician, Registered (DTR) or credential to be earned within 6 months of award
    *Enrolled or admitted to a graduate school in the area of public health, gerontology, or a community related program,beginning within 6 months of receipt of the award letter.
    *Minimum of three years of professional experience.
    *Intends to practice in the field of dietetics and shows substantial contribution to the profession.
  • Carol Hayes Torio Memorial Dietetic Technician Scholarship:
    *Demonstrated financial need.
    *Entering the 2nd year of an accredited Dietetic Technician, Registered (DTR) program or a DTR entering a Didactic Program in Dietetics (DPD), an ACEND accredited Coordinated Program (CP) or an ACEND accredited graduate program
  • Carol Hayes Torio Memorial Scholarship:
    *Demonstrated financial need.
    *Entering at least t the 2nd year of a Didactic Program in Dietetics (DPD), an ACEND accredited Coordinated Program (CP), an ACEND accredited graduate program or accepted o an ACEND accredited program Supervised Practice Program beginning within 6 months of receipt of the award letter.
    *Minimum 3.0 GPA
  • Diversity Scholarship:
    *American Indian/Native American (proof required), Pacific Islander, African American, Asian, or male.
    *Demonstrated financial need.
    *Entering the 1st or 2nd year of an accredited Dietetic Technician, Registered (DTR) program or entering at least the 2nd year of an ACEND accredited Coordinated Program (CP) or an ACEND accredited graduate program, a Didactic Program in Dietetics (DPD), or accepted to an ACEND accredited Supervised Practice Program beginning within 6 months of receipt of an award letter.
    *Minimum 3.0 overall GPA.
  • Consultant Dietitians (CDC) Scholarship:
    *Demonstrated financial need.
    *Graduate of or currently enrolled in a Didactic Program in Dietetics (DPD), an ACEND accredited Coordinated Program (CP), an ACEND accredited graduate program, or accepted to attend an ACEND accredited Supervised Program beginning within 6 months of receipt of the award letter.
    *Minimum 3.0 overall GPA.
    *Prior experience in or intends to practice in the field of geriatrics or consulting.
  • Corinne Williams Scholarship:
    *Demonstrated financial need.
    *Entering 1st or 2nd year of an accredited Dietetic Technician, Registered (DTR) program or entering at least 2nd year of a Didactic Program in Dietetics (DPD), an ACEND accredited Coordinated Program (CP), an ACEND accredited graduate program, or accepted to an ACEND accredited Supervised Practice Program beginning within 6 months of receipt of an award letter.
    *Minimum 3.0 overall GPA.
  • Jacqueline Saracino Scholarships:
    *Demonstrated Financial Need.
    *Entering 1st or 2nd year of an accredited Dietetic Technician, Registered (DTR) program or entering at least 2nd year of a Didactic Program in Dietetics (DPD), an ACEND accredited Coordinated Program (CP), an ACEND accredited graduate program, or accepted to an ACEND accredited Supervised Practice Program beginning within 6 months of receipt of an award letter.
    *Minimum 3.0 overall GPA.
    *Member of CA Academy Los Angeles District
    *Demonstrated Community involvement either within or outside of the area of nutrition.
  • Back to School for Master's Degree:
    *Bachelor's Degree.
    *Registered Dietitian (RD).
    *Enrolled in or admitted to a graduate school (proof required).
    * Minimum of 3 years of professional experience.
    *Intends to continue practicing in the field of dietetics and shows promise of making a substantial contribution to the profession.

Additional Scholarship and Separate Applications: 

Phyllis S. Howe Award and Scholarships
Phyllis S. Howe left the CAND Foundation a portion of her very substantial estate.

In her name, a rotating award and scholarships are available for members of the Bay Area District, Diablo Valley District and the Silicon Valley District (formerly San Jose Peninsula District).

DIABLO VALLEY DISTRICT LEADERSHIP AWARD:

For the 2020-2021 year, the funds will be distributed to members of the Diablo Valley District Board Of Directors to attend a FNCE20, Advocacy Summit, or CANDAC20 (one scholarship up to $2000) AWARD application is DUE MAY 1, 2020 by 5pm along with recommendations. 

SCHOLARSHIPS
Membership in the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, and Active, Retired,or Student membership in the CA Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, Diablo Valley District is required for all Scholarships. California Resident, US Resident, SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION due May 1, 2020 5pm along with recommendations. 

Back to School for Master’s Degree (Two $2000 scholarships)

Bachelor’s degree.
Registered Dietitian (RD).
Enrolled in or admitted to a graduate school.
Three to five years of professional experience.
Intends to practice in the field of dietetics and shows promise of making asubstantial contribution to the profession.

Undergraduate Scholarship for Junior Year for use in the Senior Year (Two $2000 scholarships)

Demonstrated financial need.
Entering at least the second year of an accredited Coordinated Program (CP) or Didactic Program in Dietetics (DPD).

Dietetic Technician, Registered (One$2000 scholarship)

Demonstrated financial need.
Entering at least the second year of anaccredited Dietetic Technician, Registered program.

RD Seeking a Certification (One $500 scholarship)
Registered Dietitian (RD).
Eligible to sit for the CDE exam, CNSC exam, or an exam related to the Commission on Dietetic Registration’s Board Certification as a Specialist in Pediatric Nutrition, Renal Nutrition, Gerontological Nutrition, OncologyNutrition or Sports Dietetics.
